General Introduction/Information
In this large and dynamic department, students are encouraged to express themselves in a variety of ways in an academically rich environment. Grammar is taught alongside the development of creative skills and an emphasis is placed on developing confidence in using the English language. The English National Curriculum leads on to study at IGCSE and ultimately A level.
Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 and 9)
In Keystage 3, students follow the English National Curriculum involving all the language skills, and are assessed against ENC criteria in reading and writing in a variety of styles and purposes, and in speaking and listening skills. Drama, public speaking and creative expression are encouraged, and students are grouped according to their current skill levels in English.
Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11)
Students follow the Cambridge IGCSE curricula in English as a Second Language (which suitable candidates may sit at the end of Year 10) and First Language English, which is available for all native speakers and students who pass ESL in Year 10. Most students also follow the IGCSE course in English Literature, giving most students the opportunity of at least two, and possibly three IGCSE passes. Students are grouped according to their aptitude for each examination course.
Key Stage 5 (Years 12 and 13)
The Department offers up to three AS/A level courses, depending on the aptitude and interests of the students. These are: English Language, Language and Literature in English (both AS) and Literature in English (AS and A levels). All non-native speakers also sit the IELTS examination at the end of Year 12.
