General Introduction/Information
The Mathematics Department at BIST aims to enable students to reach the highest standards of Mathematics through carefully structured and individually tailored programmes of study. Our students are exposed to a range of teaching and learning styles which cater for their personal learning needs. All our classrooms are equipped with computer projection facilities, and full use is made of ICT to enhance teaching and learning. Students are placed in flexible ability sets and more able students are entered for the UKMT Maths Challenge in which they have achieved considerable success.
Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 and 9)
Key Stage 3 Mathematics enables students to build calculation strategies, effectively use calculators, develop and strengthen algebra skills including algebraic reasoning and proof, understand geometrical reasoning, have good construction and visualisation skills, make inferences from statistical data and sharpen enquiry and creative thinking skills.
Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11)
IGCSE Mathematics enables students to use and apply mathematical knowledge in the areas of number, algebra, shape and space and handling data. Students learn to solve problems, present the solutions clearly and interpret the results. They apply Mathematics in everyday situations and develop an understanding of the way in which Mathematics is used in the world around them. Students follow either the Core or Extended curriculum depending on their ability.
Key Stage 5 (Years 12 and 13)
The A Level Mathematics course aims to enable students to develop their mathematical knowledge and skills, form an understanding of mathematical principles and an appreciation of mathematics as a logical and coherent subject. Students develop the ability to analyse problems logically and use mathematics as a means of communication with emphasis on the use of clear expression. Students study Pure Mathematics, Mechanics and Statistics and more able students have the option of studying Further Mathematics.
