General Introduction/Information
At Bromsgrove we endeavour to encourage as many students as possible to participate in Music making, at what ever level. There are a number of choirs and instrumental groups as well as smaller ensembles. Students are encouraged to perform at every opportunity, whether in assemblies, inter-house competitions or more formal concerts.
Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 and 9)
The current scheme of work is based on the National Curriculum but takes into consideration the international nature of our students. Work is drawn from a number of sources, some adapted from UK schemes. The English National Curriculum involves all students in units of work which integrate the core areas of listening and appraising, performing and composing.
Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11)
IGCSE music continues to integrate the three areas of performing composing and listening and appraising and offers students the opportunity to develop their range of basic musical skills. Students are encouraged to join as many, and as varied, extra curricular music activities as possible to help in the process of creating rounded musicians. They are also encouraged to continue with their instrumental and vocal lessons as one way to support performance.
Key Stage 5 (Years 12 and 13)
AS/A level music is a very demanding subject requiring the utmost commitment from students. It is also a very rewarding subject requiring a performance level equivalent to ABRSM grade 6 and above. Students are expected to study in detail a number of set works from various genres and compose both in pastiche and in free style. As with the IGCSE qualification, much of the final qualification is based on course work although there is a listening examination to test both general, musical knowledge and the understanding of the set works.
