EAL (English as an Additional Language) |
General Introduction/Information BIST follows the English National Curriculum, all except modern language teaching is conducted in English and the school operates a strict ‘English only’ speaking policy. For those students new to an English environment, or whose English skills may prevent them from fully accessing the syllabus, there is a comprehensive programme of additional support.
Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 and 9)
As well as the groupings within the English Department, students with considerable support needs attend an EAL Booster course. Students may also be withdrawn from selected lessons. All students who are non-native speakers also receive in-class support for up to 6 lessons a week.
Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11)
Although the programme is designed to follow the same pattern as in Key Stage 3, students in Key Stage 4 are not withdrawn from their IGCSE lessons. Extra sessions are available at lunchtimes for those in need of support at this level.
Key Stage 5 (Years 12 and 13)
It is unusual for EAL Support to be needed at this advanced level, but students in need join the Key Stage 4 programme where appropriate.
