PSHCE is taught from KS1 to KS5. This curriculum programme has continuity across each year group and the learning is progressive.
Key stage 1
Children identify and name some feelings (for example through interpreting facial expressions) and express some of their positive qualities. Children make simple choices about some aspects of their health and wellbeing. Children recognise that bullying is wrong and can list some ways to get help in dealing with it.
Key stage 2
Children demonstrate that they recognise their own worth and that of others. Children make choices about how to develop healthy lifestyles. Children explain how their actions have consequences for themselves and others.
Key stage 3
Students reflect on and evaluate their achievements and strengths in all areas of their lives and recognise their own worth. Students explain how to stay physically and mentally healthy. Students recognise difference and diversity, and can demonstrate understanding and empathy towards others who live their lives in different ways. Careers advice starts in KS3 and is built upon in future years.
Key stage 4
Students assess their personal qualities, skills and achievements and use these to set future goals. Students can describe the short- and long-term consequences of personal health choices, and can make decisions based on this knowledge. Students compare the diversity of ethnic and cultural groups. Students discuss relationships, feelings and emotions, and can analyse ways of managing these in connection with family events.
Key stage 5
Students engage in a pastoral programme that provides them with the skills and knowledge to meet their needs for Further or Higher Education and employment. Students also develop their decision-making and critical skills as they consider a wide range of political, social, ethical and moral problems.
