Visual Arts

From the first days of school, we encourage our students to investigate, create and make artwork using a variety of media.

In Early Years and Primary, children explore both 2D and 3D works of art and are given opportunities to make sculptures, create textiles, print images, paint and draw. The topic-based curriculum ensures the children are exploring art from different periods of time, different artists and different cultures.

Our art and design curriculum, starting in Year 7, has been developed to suit the individual needs and interests of our students. We aim to give students a broad experience in art, following the English National Curriculum (ENC), developing confidence through exploration of materials, ideas and problem-solving. Students will study the work of a variety of artists as well as working in 2D media and 3D construction.

Key Stage 3 (ages 11 to 14)

In KS3, students begin their Art and Design education by looking at one topic per term, covering the foundations of art, the visual elements (such as line, tone, pattern, form and colour) and how we view art work. This is an opportunity for the students to learn new skills, experiment with and gain a basic understanding of different media and techniques with which to visually communicate their ideas. They will also study a number of different contemporary and traditional Artists. Throughout the three years, students will have opportunities to collaborate with other students and also develop independence in their ideas and in using media. With each new year they will develop skills further as well as building on former knowledge and experience.

Key Stage 4 (ages 14 -16)

Art and Design iGCSE is a practical course that allows students to build on and explore, in more depth, a variety of 2D and 3D art materials and techniques. Through completing the iGCSE Art and Design course, students will gain important lifelong skills, including: the ability to communicate concepts and feelings; recording from direct observation and personal experience; and the confidence to experiment, be innovative, intuitive and imaginative, among others. They will also be expected to research different artists and art movements to help broaden and develop their own ideas and skills. The course is assessed by an exam and coursework. The projects will involve experiments, research and development of ideas through practical artwork, which eventually lead to the completion of a final piece.

Key Stage 5 (ages 16 -18): Art and Design

A Level Art and Design is a project based qualification. At AS Level, students complete a coursework project (25%) and an exam project (25%). At A Level, students complete a personal investigation project (50%), which involves practical work and written analysis of up to 1500 words. The study of Art involves experimenting, engaging and mastering a range of 2D, 3D, photography and printing media, also researching and analysing the work of artists. Art students should be risk takers who are able to work independently with imagination and inventiveness.

Key Stage 5 (ages 16 -18): Digital Media and Design

A Level Digital Media and Design is for students who want to explore a range of processes and techniques in digital media. Will be grouped into two areas of study; moving image and mobile and multimedia applications including games design. Students develop the knowledge and skills that will prepare them for working in a collaborative industry. You will develop an awareness of the world of digital media and design and the factors and contexts that influence it. There are three assessed components of the course; two at AS and one at A level, where you can choose your own field of study to produce a personal investigation, which includes a portfolio and written assignment.
